Alternatives to master

This article is more than a year old and the information in it may be out of date.

In an effort to remove unnecessary references to slavery and replace them with more inclusive terms, many companies are opting to replace the term master as their main git branch name.

GitHub opted for Main but here are a few other options to consider.

  • Primary
  • Source


The term for the person from whom a clone is, well, cloned in various science fiction novels and shows.


  • Progenitor: The progenitor is the – sometimes legendary – founder of a family, line of descent, clan or tribe, noble house or an ethnic group.


"Cloning" is a horticultural term deriving from the Greek word for twig.

  • Root
  • Radix (Latin for "Root")
  • Trunk (Neatly relates to "branches" in development. Also used in SVN)



In almost all cases, the comments section is a vile cesspool of Reply Guys, racists, and bots.

I don't want to have to deal with that kind of hell so I don't have a comments section.
